There’s no denying that Jurnee Smollett is a force to be reckoned with, and now the Lovecraft Country and Birds of Prey star is boarding the Netflix movie Lou as star and executive producer. She joins Allison Janney, who will also star and executive produce the film directed by Anna Foerster.
Written by Maggie Cohn, the story of Lou begins after a young girl is kidnapped. Her mother, with no other option, teams up with the mysterious older
woman to pursue the kidnapper – a journey into the wilderness that will test their limits and expose dark and shocking secrets from their pasts.
Set to produce what sounds like a harrowing thriller is J.J. Abrams, Jon Cohen, and Hannah Minghella of Bad Robot. Joining Smollett and Janney as executive producers are Braden Aftergood and Lindsey Weber. In the past, Foerster has directed episodes of Westworld, Outlander, and Carnival Row. She also helmed the Underworld sequel, Underworld: Blood Wars, starring Kate Beckinsale.

Smollett has been in the acting game since childhood with roles on shows like On Our Own, and Full House. She got her big feature-film break when she starred as Phoebe in Francis Ford Coppola’s Jack, starring Robin Williams. Later in her career, she landed starring roles in high-profile series like True Blood, Sophia the First, and, of course, Lovecraft Country. Next, she’ll co-star alongside Chris Hemsworth and Miles Teller in Joseph Kosinski’s Escape From Spiderhead. The aforementioned film takes place shortly when convicts are offered the chance to volunteer as medical subjects to shorten their sentences. One such subject for a new drug capable of generating feelings of love begins questioning the reality of his emotions.
Ready yourselves for more from Smollett, because despite being in the game for most of her life, her star only continues to rise.
