Lace up your kicks, turn up the music and get ready for an epic dance-off because New Line’s HOUSE PARTY reboot may have found its replacements for Kid ‘n Play.
Per Deadline, Jorge Lendeborg Jr. (Bumblebee, Boogie) and Tosin Cole (Doctor Who, Resolution) are in negotiations to lead the reimagining of the 1990 cult comedy. Award-winning music video director Calmatic will be directing for his feature debut.
In the original film, Kid (Christopher “Kid” Reid) decides to go to his friend Play’s (Christopher “Play” Martin) house party, but neither of them can predict what’s in store for them on what could be the wildest night of their lives. Beloved by many across generations, House Party kept the party bumpin’ for two legit sequels – House Party 2 (1991) and House Party 3 (1994). A fourth film bearing the House Party name, House Party 4: Down to the Last Minute, was released in 2001 and starred Marques Houston, Kyn Whitley, and Alexis Fields. Lastly, House Party: Tonight’s the Night tried to get the party started in 2013.
House Party was a box office burner for New Line in 1990, and some would tell you that the movie helped put hip-hop on the map. The movie also served as a career starter for talents like writer/director Reginald Hudlin as well as many young actors including Reid, Martin, Tisha Martin-Campbell, Martin Lawrence, A.J. Johnson, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell, and Full Force (Paul Anthony, Bowlegged Lou, and B-Fine).
Word has it that New Line and Springhill were looking to cast up-and-comers for the fresh and funky reboot, and after countless auditions, landed on Lendeborg Jr. and Cole to star. Auditions for their female counterparts will soon take place, and fans can expect plenty of surprises and cameos as well.
